Monday morning at Merchants Park in Carroll. On the eastern side, the Class 3A state baseball tournament kicked off an Duane Banks Field in Iowa City.
Here's a rundown of the results:
No. 6 Sergeant Bluff-Luton 5, No. 3 Lewis Central 4 (8)
Controversy found this one late in the eighth inning.
With two outs and the go-ahead run on third after S-BL’s Brayden Kerr singled and stole two bases, Lewis Central had seemingly wiggled out of the jam when Scott Kroll struck out. But the third strike was dropped — and the throw to first was late — allowing Kerr to score from third.
That’s where things get hairy. Lewis Central coached Jim Waters believed the wild pitch had hit Kroll in fair territory after the swing and miss, which would’ve made Kroll out and ended the frame. But the original call was upheld after the umpires convened. Waters was tossed shortly after for arguing the play.
Lewis Central went in order in the bottom half.
No.5 Independence 8, No. 4 West Delaware 7
Loaded with action up until the final out, Independence and West Delaware delivered the tense action expected in a 4-5 affair. In the end, the Mustangs held on despite blowing an early 6-0 advantage.
That’s because West Delaware erupted for four in the fourth and two more in the fifth to pull even with an incredible comeback. With those in orange and black roaring with jubilation, Independence had to quickly regroup to avoid a complete meltdown.
The Mustangs (30-11) did, plating two in the sixth when Trey Weber, Marcus Beatty and Mitchell Johnson strung consecutive hits together with a fielding error in between. West Delaware (32-11) pulled within a run in the bottom half and had the tying run on second in the seventh, before Independence escaped to advance to the Class 3A semifinals.
The Mustangs will face top-seeded Davenport Assumption at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

No. 1 Davenport Assumption 11, No. 8 Pella 1 (6)
No trouble for the top dogs in Class 3A.
After some seesawing action early, the Knights broke free and scored the game’s final nine runs to put Monday’s quarterfinal win away. A five-run fifth ended any upset chances Pella hoped to capture.
Seven different Knights (31-6) picked up hits, with the most damaging blow coming on Chance Dreyer’s two-run homer in the third. Dreyer also shined on the mound, yielding just six hits and one run with three strikeouts over six solid frames.
The Dutch (23-15) had a few sporadic scoring chances, but Pella finished 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and 2-for-12 with runners on.
Remaining Class 3A quarterfinal games:
No. 2 Western Dubuque (29-11) vs. No. 7 Winterset (16-14), 7:30 p.m.
